Onshore Pipelines

Reducing Risk for Complex Challenges

Atteris combines practical expertise with sound engineering process to identify and mitigate risks associated with pipeline problem areas.

Difficult geology, ground movement, and congested easements, all lead to problem areas for onshore pipelines. Environmental protection, cultural heritage, and land access can also call for specialist expertise in pipeline design and construction.

Atteris has a track record in developing solutions that protect pipeline assets and preserve what our society values most.

Horizontal Directional Drilling

Our understanding of HDD pipeline design and construction has been applied to hundreds of successful installations worldwide.

Atteris draws on decades of successful HDD projects to identify the lowest risk, least impact HDD method for your pipeline crossing. Roads, rivers, railways, and cliffs are just a few of the features commonly requiring HDD to ensure safe and efficient delivery of pipeline projects; Atteris has demonstrated expertise for all these types of crossings and more.

Atteris offers HDD design and construction management services for all phases of pipeline and cable projects, from concept development, geotechnical investigation scope, specifications and management, detailed design and engineering analysis, coating selection, tender support, construction quality assurance, and integrity management.

Ground Movement and Geohazards

Atteris’ team of engineering analysts and FEA experts are accustomed to forging bespoke solutions for geohazard management, providing practical advice and trustworthy results.

Landslides, creep, seismic activity, and geomorphology can all threaten onshore pipeline integrity throughout the construction and operations phases of a pipeline. Atteris combines sound engineering geology and geotechnical knowledge to define and model pipeline threats and failure modes due to geohazards.

Atteris utilises advanced numerical methods and FEA to define ground movement loading, likely pipeline stress levels, and strain capacity prior to identified ground movement events occurring. Practical operations and management methods can then be developed to reduce geohazard risks to ALARP.

Tunnelling and Other Trenchless Technologies

Our broad knowledge of trenchless installation techniques ensures that the lowest risk methodology is identified.

Every pipeline crossing is unique. The pipeline diameter, crossing length, geological formation, and other site specific issues combine to present a specific risk profile. A thorough understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of trenchless options is necessary to preserve safety and environment whilst balancing cost and risk.

Atteris’ in-depth experience with tunnelling, both segmentally lined and pipe-jacking, has been utilised for Australia’s longest pipeline tunnels. Direct Pipe, auger laser boring, and hammering, amongst other methods, should be considered at the concept stage to avoid bias towards inappropriate and high-risk trenchless methods. Innovative combinations of trenchless methods can yield exceptional results such as the Award-winning Otway Gas pipeline shore crossing, designed by Atteris, which utilised retractable microtunnelling to install a conductor casing through an unstable formation.

Pipeline Replacement and Relocation Design

Atteris provides a one-stop-shop for pipeline relocation and replacement, reducing interfaces and improving engineering efficiency.

Modern infrastructure upgrades and developments often encroach upon pipeline corridors, compromising depth of cover or surface loading limits.

Atteris’ pipeline analyses, process and flow assurance, and trenchless design disciplines integrate to provide relocation solutions that are practical, constructible, and streamlined. Our subsea hot-tapping expertise demonstrates that we can design safe and reliable pipeline replacement sections in the most challenging environments, ensuring continuous service delivery throughout brownfields upgrades including onshore projects.

Safety Management Studies

We apply specialist engineering techniques to eliminate or quantify the risk associated with onshore pipeline threats.

Our track record in both greenfield and brownfield onshore pipeline projects provides a wealth of information that we draw upon to facilitate and participate in AS2885.6 Safety Management Studies.

When uncertainty arises regarding the consequence of unusual threats, such as drilling activities by third parties, Atteris is experienced in applying advanced engineering analysis to determine whether the residual risk has achieved ALARP levels.

Traffic Loading and Pipeline Protection

We take a practical approach to pipeline protection using fit-for-purpose methods to ensure pipeline integrity.

Atteris has undertaken many pipeline live loading assessments, allowing our clients to assess their exposure to traffic loading threats in all manner of urban and rural environments.

We have developed tools for pipeline owners that allow their operators in the field to make go or no-go decisions in real time regarding construction vehicle crossings.

Whether it be detailed FEA analysis or numerical code checks, Atteris can provide peace of mind for pipeline road, rail, and track crossings.
