APLNG Landslide Response Plan

APLNG Landslide Response Plan

Benefits
The landslide response plan provides the operator with a systematic plan in the event of a landslide occurring that could threaten the integrity of their 42-inch APLNG pipeline which routes down an escarpment.
Background
The escarpment section of the 42-inch APLNG pipeline is a 400 m long and is exposed to tropical cyclones. In 2015, Tropical Cyclone Maria caused erosional damage along the escarpment. Discontinuities were noted along the weathered rock sections that could increase the risk of local instability and it was recommended that ground movement monitoring be installed, and an emergency response plan be developed for landslides.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris presented several options that could be used to manage and / or respond to ground movement along the escarpment:

  • Inspection – In-line inspection (ILI) coupled with Inertial Measurement unit (IMU) and Right of Way (ROW) inspection coupled with Magnetometry Tomography Method (MTM) to survey pipeline integrity
  • Monitoring – Topographic survey, LIDAR, Inclinometer or Fibre Optic cable to detect ground movement
  • Digital Modelling – Geological and pipe-soil modelling to predict the stresses along the pipeline should landslide occur
  • Mitigation options – Excavation for stress relief and slope stabilisation as recovery measure in the event on landslide.

Based on these options, Atteris developed a high-level response plan and an escarpment management plan to provide guidance on activities to be performed in the event that ground movement is detected to ensure pipeline integrity is not impacted.
