Barrow Island Northern Route Concept Study

Barrow Island Northern Route Concept Study

Benefits
Atteris defined a cable (and pipelines) route around Barrow Island for future subsea tiebacks which would avoid the need for Chevron to alter the existing Right of Way across BWI and its associated legislation.
Background
Chevron is assessing concepts for Greater Gorgon compression facilities offshore, including subsea compression. This option requires high-voltage electrical power cable from the LNG plant on Barrow Island (BWI) to a subsea compression facility
Installing the new cable within the existing Right of Way (ROW) across BWI may be challenging due to spatial constraints and changing the legislation associated with the RoW would also be challenging. Chevron requested a second concept option be studied where up to four new services (cables and pipelines) are routed subsea along the eastern and northern coastline of BWI.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris initially considered a number of routes around BWI, then narrowed the route selection to the northern corridor illustrated above. A number of shore crossing options adjacent the LNG plant were then assessed and the optimum concepts defined – for a single cable an HDD was found to be the best value, but for multiple flowlines and cables a Microtunnel offered better value.

Atteris also considered the installation constraints for the concept and recommended an interface point at the north-east section of BWI where shallow water cable lay and pipe lay vessels would interface with larger & deeper draft vessels.  Cost estimates for all concepts were compiled as input into Chevron’s decision analysis processes.
