Greenbushes HDD Design Verification

Greenbushes HDD Design Verification

Benefits
Atteris provided guidance for the Blackwood River Crossing Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) design. Recommendations were made with regards to:
• HDD entry location • Further analysis requirement because of high-risk geotechnical conditions • Stringing area configuration • Development of pipeline pull-back and HDD procedures • Monitoring of drilling fluid escape in areas with limited soil cover • Drilling fluid circulation monitoring (mud returns) at entry and exit points
Background
The Bridgetown Regional Water Supply scheme aimed to connect the Millstream Dam with seven southwest towns in the Shires of Boyup Brook, Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Donnybrook-Balingup. The objective of this scheme was to improve the reliability and quality of water supply to the towns of Balingup, Boyup Brook, Bridgetown, Greenbushes, Hester, Kirup and Mullalyup, involving performing a Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Crossing of the Blackwood River.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris was engaged to perform a peer review of Blackwood River Crossing HDD design, and to provide a drilling fluid pressure assessment of the HDD design.

This scope involved:

  • Review of design drawings and design calculations to demonstrate acceptability of pipeline properties
  • Review of HDD methodology and procedures to verify feasibility of design.
  • Review of the proposed drill rig to ensure its capability of meeting the design requirements
  • Review of pipeline welding procedure
  • Interpretation of the geotechnical factual report to estimate soil properties
  • A drilling fluid pressure assessment based on the drilling profile and surface geometry
