In-Line Structure Concept Design

In-Line Structure Concept Design

Benefits
Atteris investigated a variety of piping and structure configurations which were under consideration for the 42-inch Browse to NWS Trunkline. Having an overarching view of potential vessels and installation options allowed Atteris to provide an in-depth assessment of the structure concept designs and provide guidance to Woodside on the constraints of the large diameter trunkline structure selection.
Background
The proposed 42-inch Browse to NWS Trunkline, if installed, would be the largest diameter pipeline installed in water depths up to 500m. The loads experienced by the vessel during pipelay and inline structure installation are close to the practical limits of what is possible with current pipelay vessels. It is important to identify at an early stage which structure options are possible and what effect certain structure choices will have on the project such as lay direction, installation and pre-commissioning methodologies, risk and cost.
Work Performed by Atteris

For each of the ten potential structure options, Atteris assessed typical piping component weights and associated spool loadings. The required foundation sizes and overall structure weight were then calculated according to recognised industry standards. Clash checks were performed to identify possible issues in the pipelay vessels’ firing lines and post tensioner work areas. Orcaflex analyses were preformed of the structures in both the overbend and sagbend situations to assess the resulting loadings on the vessel and adjacent pipeline joints. Multiple installation options were investigated to define limitations for mudmat arrangements and whether the PLET structures could be installed in the process of pipeline initiation or laydown.
