Kutubu Pipeline Movement Review

Kutubu Pipeline Movement Review

Benefits
Atteris conducted a review of pipeline movement for the 268 km 20-inch Kutubu pipeline located in the southern highlands of Papua New Guinea. The review provided the client with a clearer picture of the pipeline’s integrity as well as steps to further quantify the pipeline’s integrity in areas of interest.
Background
The Kutubu field production fluid is transported via the Kutubu Pipeline System to the Kumul Marine Terminal located in the Gulf of Papua, 40 km off the southern coast of Papua New Guinea. A review of historical survey data sets indicated that the pipeline may have moved laterally. Excessive lateral movement could compromise the integrity of this ageing pipeline leading to potential loss of containment.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris reviewed the available datasets and highlighted the locations of interest (KP locations) where pipeline integrity may have been compromised.

The following information was used as part of the review scope:

  • Previous reports on pipeline movement;
  • Marine hydrographic survey data;
  • XYZ strain data;
  • Pipeline positional survey data.

A methodical approach was adopted where the various survey datasets were collated and compared along each pipeline section. The assessment covered strain comparisons, burial comparisons, scour detection and survey data (SSS, MBES etc.) comparisons from the various datasets. The level of accuracy of each dataset was also considered in the review. This information was then screened, reviewed and checked for correlations to provide a robust quantitative interpretation of the pipeline’s integrity. Imminent integrity threats were highlighted. Atteris also provided recommendations for future work to further quantify the risk at locations of interest.
