NR2 DP Plug Verification

Atteris confirmed that an HDP Plug could be used in both proposed locations of the WEL IFL to provide a double block isolation of the pipeline for the duration of piling activities associated with the NR2 installation. It was found that the pipeline wall had adequate strength to allow the HDP Plug to be installed in either location without compromising the integrity of the pipeline.
Background
Development of the nearby NR2 platform required that the NRA platform be isolated from the IFL and the 2TL by means of a High Differential Pressure (HDP) plug. Atteris was engaged to review the analysis undertaken by the HDP plug supplier to verify the integrity of the IFL at the proposed plug set locations.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris performed the following:

  • Review of pipeline data for proposed plug installation location
  • Undertake a pipeline stress analysis for the proposed plug set locations
  • Determine the critical stress at which local deformation may occur
  • Provide a design DP that will not permanently deform the pipeline
  • Review the stress analysis report provided by the HDP plug Supplier
  • Provide recommendations for plug set locations and monitoring of the plugs

In the case where an isolation was to be compromised, a double block would no longer be in place. Because of this, it was recommended that:

  • All works that required a double block isolation be stopped immediately
  • Pressure was reduced on the platform side of the plug
  • When safe, the plug was re-set and tested to ensure complete double block isolation.
