Oil Search Mechanical Connector Study

Oil Search Mechanical Connector Study

Benefits
Atteris identified a suitable vendor that can provide a technically qualified, logistically practical and cost-efficient mechanical connector in the event of a required emergency pipeline repair of the 20-inch Kutubu Export Pipeline, that was suitable for both onshore and offshore application. The work provided the Client with assurance that there is technology available that is suitable and available for application.
Background
The 20-inch Kutubu Export Pipeline (KEP) is a 260 km long pipeline transporting oil from the Central Processing Platform to the Kumul Marine Terminal in the Gulf of Papua. The pipeline is divided into four sections namely offshore, onshore, river crossing and tanker loading line. Oil Search plans to procure a set of mechanical connectors as part of its emergency pipeline repair strategy and required recommendation of a suitable system and vendor. The challenge was to qualify the connector for requirements and limitations of potential application onshore and offshore in challenging terrain.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris assessed the suitability of mechanical connectors from various vendors. Atteris liaised with the vendors to gather equipment specifications, datasheets and quotations. Atteris performed a comparative assessment and presented results in a report, which considered the following:

  • Product technical qualifications e.g. code compliance, materials certification and structural capacity
  • Cost and schedule of delivery to the remote site
  • Transportability of connector and repair equipment
  • Piggability of the pipeline following repair
  • Design and installation considerations for different sections of the pipeline
  • Storage and maintenance requirements and cost
  • Vendor’s track record

Based on the Client’s requirements, Atteris recommended the appropriate mechanical connector and vendor for the application.
