Pipeline Internal Corrosion Assessment

Atteris’ applied its expertise in corrosion engineering and the Pipeline Defect Assessment Manual (PDAM) to perform an assessment of the features that were detected in our Client’s pipeline. The Client was able to understand the level of operational risk and optimise its inspection and monitoring activity, as well as defer a planned repair campaign. Atteris demonstrated with confidence that previous defect assessment methods were overly conservative.
Background
The wet multiphase pipeline experienced raw seawater ingress during installation, resulting in internal corrosion features. Multiple in-line inspections have been carried out to track the growth rate of corrosion features. Corrosion assessments performed by other third-parties had concluded that the pipeline required repair in the short term.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris performed a corrosion assessment of the pipeline using an in-house approach that tracked the growth of every significant corrosion feature across several ILI pig runs. The future growth of each feature was then extrapolated and assessed with PDAM methods.

To perform the assessment, Atteris used a range of input data including the pipeline design, its operations history, in-line inspection results and flow assurance data. Atteris developed a probabilistic corrosion model to extrapolate each corrosion feature’s growth to determine when the pipeline would reach its serviceability limit state.

Atteris also reviewed the historical corrosion inhibitor dosing data and provided the Client with a recommendation on the effectiveness of the existing dosing regime.
