Pipeline Isolation HDPP Engineering Assessment

Pipeline Isolation HDPP Engineering Assessment

Benefits
Atteris’ combined global and local finite element analysis (FEA) modelling approach enabled a range of positions for an HDPP (High Differential Pressure Plug) to be identified, enabling better planning for a pending valve repair. The detailed local FEA models at the proposed HDPP locations determined the maximum differential pressure which the HDPP could withstand without exceeding various pipewall limits.
Background
A ball valve within the Pluto Trunkline Onshore Terminal required replacement. An HDPP was planned to isolate the valve from the upstream section of the 180 km long 36-inch Trunkline in order to carry out the repair.
Work Performed by Atteris

Global analysis of potential HDPP locations determined the global behavior of the piping and the associated loads to be input to the detailed local FEA model.

Local Abaqus analysis of the piping when subject to the local radial and slip loads from the HDPP and global loads determined the allowable differential pressure (in accordance with DNVGL-RP-F113) for the isolation and for the leak test.

Atteris advised the client of the optimal HDPP position for the isolation and for a contingency location should the optimal location not be achievable.
