Reedy Creek to Wallumbilla Pipeline HDD Review

The HDD review provided the Client with confidence on design robustness of the HDD section and highlighted aspects of the planned design or installation work that could impact construction operation and integrity of the pipeline in the HDD section.
Background
Atteris conducted a design review of the Reedy Creek to Wallumbilla Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) pipeline section. The 18-inch high pressure gas transmission pipeline routes from an existing facility at Wallumbilla to the Reedy Creek gas processing plant in Queensland. This allows greater production flexibility and allows temporary gas storage in the event of an outage.
Work Performed by Atteris

The objective of the work was to verify the HDD contractor’s design, methodology and calculations. Atteris reviewed the Contractor’s HDD installation procedure against requirements of the PRCI guideline for Installation of Pipeline by HDD. The review covered installation, overbend and operational stresses and the following aspects:

  • Stress calculations
  • Drilling fluid pressure assessment
  • Proposed equipment for HDD operations
  • HDD construction methodology.

The review identified geotechnical data gaps, which could present risk to the project, given actual geotechnical properties may vary from the values assumed for the design. Atteris recommended hydro-fracture analyses and a mud program in the event that the site conditions were found to be different from assumed values.
