Retrofit Spool Insulation – Feasibility Study

Retrofit Spool Insulation – Feasibility Study

Benefits
Atteris identified and ranked several retrofit insulation concepts for several Pluto field development spools. These concept options sufficiently increased the cool to hydrate times with no requirement to upgrade the current MEG injection system, the capacity of which was predicted to become inadequate for the forecast production profiles.
Background
Several Pluto wells were forecast to start producing formation water. It was anticipated that the existing MEG injection system would not provide injection rates enough to inhibit hydrate formation in a shutdown and cooldown scenario. The Client was investigating options to mitigate hydrate formation risk by either:
• Increasing MEG dosing rates, or • Applying retro-fit insulation to one or more spools in the drill centre that would permit lower MEG injection rates, suitable for the capacity of the existing system.
Atteris was engaged to assess the latter option.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris performed an engineering study to:

  • Identify options that enables insulation to be installed on all 8” well jumpers and the 14” Production spool.
  • Define the advantages and disadvantages of each option and whether further assessment was required
  • Provide an indication of the cool to hydrate time that could be achieved for each option
  • Identify technical limitations and uncertainties for each option on each spool
  • Assess the practicality of each option, particularly considering installability
  • Develop class 1 cost estimates for each option.
