Scarborough Shore Approach Study

Scarborough Shore Approach Study

Benefits
Atteris performed the trunkline shore approach study for Woodside’s Scarborough development. Key benefits realised included the selection of a feasible trunkline route and the definition of the trunkline concept design, with minimal disruption to the environment and nearby stakeholders.
Background
The Scarborough development concept is being developed by Woodside. It consists of several subsea production wells tied back to a semi-submersible gas processing and compression platform. The gas will be transported directly from the platform to the Pluto Onshore plant on the Burrup Peninsula via an approximately 450 km long dry gas trunkline. Routing of the gas trunkline through Mermaid Sound to the Pluto LNG plant was performed by Atteris.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris design work included:

  • Trunkline route selection
  • Shore crossing site visit and assessment
  • Selection of construction methodologies for the shore pull, pipeline installation and secondary stabilisation / mechanical protection requirements based on minimising risks and disruptions to nearby facilities and constraints which may be imposed by other stakeholders
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment including provision of preventative and mitigation controls that could be considered during design and construction
  • Cost and schedule estimates
  • Shore crossing site layouts
  • Input into proposed geophysical/geotechnical survey campaign scopes of work to ensure sufficient data is available for all design and construction activities.
  • Stakeholder engagement (e.g. environmental approvals, logistics etc.)

Key challenges included:

  • Pipeline routing through a congested area with large amounts of existing infrastructure (e.g. subsea high-pressure gas pipelines, shipping channels, jetties, anchoring zones etc.) and significant vessel traffic.
  • Shore pull feasibility given limited land at shore crossing site and proximity to the Pluto LNG jetty and the Pluto trunkline system
