Subsea Cable Concept for Wave Energy

Subsea Cable Concept for Wave Energy

Benefits
Having Atteris consult in both the geotechnical and subsea engineering aspects of the shore crossing design benefited the client by removing a complicated interface. By applying our expertise in both areas, the design solution that was delivered considers geotechnical challenges, as well as subsea challenges such as offshore installation and cable stabilisation.
The concept design that was delivered gave the client confidence as it clarified critical risk and safety aspects of the project. Early consideration of risk and safety is key to the success of any project. Atteris’ expertise in these areas have improved the likelihood of the project’s success in future phases.
Background
The Albany Wave Energy Project, developed and operated by Carnegie Clean Energy, is a project aimed at demonstrating the capabilities of the CETO technology. The unit deployed will be a 1.5 MW 6 Multi-moored system, that will be connected to the South-West Interconnected System via a subsea export power cable. Carnegie engaged Atteris to produce a concept design of the cable shore crossing and installation.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris’ deliverables for the HDD shore crossing concept design included:

  • Identification, ranking and recommendation of viable shore crossing sites
  • Preparation of the inferred engineering geological model for the basis of the preliminary design
  • Preliminary shore crossing HDD design and construction philosophy definition
  • Risk identification and corresponding risk management measures
  • Outline onshore and offshore geotechnical investigation scope of work
  • Export cable installation and stabilisation philosophy
  • Preliminary cost and schedule estimates.
