Barossa Project Pipeline Repair Plan Study

Atteris conducted a study on Barossa Gas Export Pipeline and Flowlines repair plan to enable the client to perform risk and economic assessment to determine the best pipeline repair pre-investment strategy.

The study provided the risk data, repair plan investment cost and repair schedule acceleration to assist the client with better investment decision making.
Background
Conoco Phillips’ Barossa Project is located 300km north of Darwin comprises of an infield gathering system with subsea wells, an FPSO and gas export pipeline tying in to the Bayu Undan pipeline. The development consists of 14-in flowlines and a 26-in Gas Export Pipeline to the Bayu Undan tie-in location. The near-shore section of the Bayu Undan pipeline will transport Barossa gas to the existing Darwin LNG Plant.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris conducted an initial assessment of the foreseeable damage modes and failure mechanisms pertinent to the Barossa flowlines and gas export pipeline. A number of repair methods were then assessed including grouted sleeves, repair clamps and pipeline section replacements using either mechanical connectors or hyperbaric welding (where practical). Atteris then assessed the various pipeline repair system pre-investment options which included:

  • Participating in repair club membership.
  • Complete repair package procurement.
  • Pre-investment in long lead items.
  • Engineering only.

Based on the above, Atteris defined repair schedule acceleration estimates and pre-investment costs for the above-listed options enabling ConocoPhillips to perform internal economic assessments to determine an appropriate level of pipeline repair pre-investment.
