Bass Strait Pipeline Integrity Management System Review

Bass Strait Pipeline Integrity Management System Review

Benefits
The Atteris review of the Exxon Mobil Bass Strait pipeline integrity management system and activities provided BHPB Petroleum and its Joint Venture partner with assurance on the condition and management of the extensive 600 km network of underwater pipelines.
Background
Atteris was engaged by BHP Billiton Petroleum to undertake a review of the pipeline integrity management system and integrity management activities for Exxon Mobil’s Bass Strait subsea pipeline assets. The objective of this review was to ascertain whether the integrity management system was being implemented in accordance with industry best practice, whether adequate integrity management activities were being identified and to identify areas for improvement.
Work Performed by Atteris

The project involved a comprehensive gap analysis of the Bass Strait pipeline integrity management documents. These included the safety case, pipeline design bases, pipeline integrity management plan, equipment maintenance strategies, pipeline repair manual, risk assessments and condition reports from inspection, monitoring, maintenance and repair activities.

Atteris noted areas where deviations were observed and where there was insufficient information to confirm that the integrity management process was being followed. The assessment adopted Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to provide an objective measure of performance. The findings were presented in a detailed report to BHPB Petroleum. A terms of reference for an on-site verification audit was also developed.
