Goulburn River Crossing HDD Case Study

Atteris conducted a design and construction review on the Goulburn River Crossing Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) for the 16-in proposed pipeline. The review provided the Client with an indication of design robustness and also closed-out gaps that could potentially affect the integrity of the HDD construction.
Background
APA Group proposed to increase the export capacity of natural gas by adding new pipeline loops parallel to an existing pipeline. The intent was to meet future contractual export capacity in the New South Wales market. The proposed 16-inch pipeline will cross the Goulburn River as part of the new looping scope. The proposed construction method for the river crossing is Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD).
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris conducted a review of all design and construction documents related to the Goulburn River HDD scope. The objective was to verify the HDD design and provide observations on the HDD construction operations. As part of the design verification, the following aspects were covered:

  • Adequacy of geotechnical data.
  • HDD profile review.
  • Drilling fluid pressure assessment.
  • HDD pull-in forces.
  • HDD construction methodology.

Based on the above, Atteris provided a view of the construction aspects considering the proposed design and construction procedures. During the review, it was found that the design profile was substantially deeper than the borehole depths resulting in more than half of the profile lying in a formation where no data had been gathered. Should a gravel layer have been present, this could have resulted in instability leading to collapse during the pull-in operation as well as linepipe coating damage. Atteris also attended the HDD construction operations and provided a list of observations in order to optimise future HDD operations for the Client.
