Offshore Wind Turbines – Structural RBI Assessment and Software Development

Offshore Wind Turbines – Structural RBI Assessment and Software Development

Benefits
Risk Based Inspection (RBI) assessments provide visibility into the criticality of assets and components to an organisation. By developing an RBI software tool and methodology for the offshore wind turbine foundations, our client benefits from being able to optimise its inspection campaigns and be able to better manage its risks through having a tool that enabled a shift from a prescriptive to time-based approach to a condition-based approach.
Background
Ørsted is the operator for the largest wind power network in the world. The company engaged Atteris to develop a Risk Based Inspection (RBI) methodology and assessment tool for its foundations, offshore substation (OSS) and offshore accommodation structure. Structural components across 18 fields and over 1200 structures were assessed.
Work Performed by Atteris

Atteris provided Ørsted with an easy to use bespoke RBI software tool which provided clarity on risk and associated costs. This RBI tool and methodology is the first of its kind in the world.

The project was executed in two phases; with an additional 9 fields added in Phase 2. Atteris conducted a comprehensive review of all current and historical asset data which included design reports, inspection reports and engineering studies. The RBI assessment and software development were completed in tandem with input from the Ørsted team. Atteris presented Ørsted with a clear picture of the criticality of structural components and time frames for their inspection. Furthermore, the functionality of the software tool was tailored to the requirements of Ørsted and their systems and interfaces.
